La carismatica ed energica sassofonista Lakecia Benjamin, votata dagli autorevoli critici di Downbeat “Poll Rising Star” (miglior astro nascente) ed “Emerging Alto Saxophonist of the Year” dalla Jazz Journalists Association, è un’artista capace di fondere i diversi stilemi del Jazz, dell’Hip Hop e del Soul. Il groove che riesce a creare con il suo alto sax è seducente e innovativo, pur onorando al tempo stesso i suoi mentori e le tradizioni jazzistiche. Lakecia ha inoltre condiviso il palcoscenico con musicisti del calibro di Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots e Macy Gray. A Udin&Jazz la Benjamin presenta “Phoenix”, un lavoro che mette in luce la sua creatività ma anche il talento e l’impegno di alcune figure di riferimento della cultura americana che hanno collaborato a questo album, come la cantante Dianne Reeves, le poetesse Georgia Anne Muldrow e Sonia Sanchez, la pianista Patrice Rushen, l’attivista Angela Davis e l’immenso Wayne Shorter, recentemente scomparso, che Lakecia definisce “the ultimate guru”. Phoenix è una doppia metafora: da un lato, racconta le cadute e le risalite della città di New York, in cui è cresciuta; dall’altro, il riferimento va ad una sua esperienza personale vissuta nel 2021, quando sfuggì miracolosamente alla morte dopo un grave incidente automobilistico.

The charismatic and energetic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, voted “Poll Rising Star” by the influential Downbeat critics and “Emerging Alto Saxophonist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association, can fuse the different styles of Jazz, Hip Hop and Soul. The groove she creates is seductive and innovative, while honoring her mentors and jazz traditions. Lakecia, who has shared the stage with musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots and Macy Gray, at Udin&Jazz presents “Phoenix”, a work that highlights his talent and also the commitment of important figures of American culture who collaborated on this album (singer Dianne Reeves, poets G. A. Muldrow and Sonia Sanchez, pianist Patrice Rushen, activist Angela Davis and the immense Wayne Shorter, who recently passed away). Phoenix is a double metaphor: on one hand the falls and rises of her city, New York; on the other, a personal experience occurred to her in 2021, when she miraculously escaped death after a serious car accident.
